There are places in the world that are picture perfect to the extent that you can just take a random picture there and it will be worth putting on your wallpaper or postcard. And yet they are not the icons of tourism in their respective countries. Take Kaikoura for example located about 183 km from the Christchurch; it is truly a picture perfect peninsular town of New Zealand.
With a 2610 m high snow capped peak looming over this coastal town with sapphire blue waters and soft sandy beaches, the setting of this place is simply unbelievable. But yet this place was not considered anything more than a small Cray fishing town with zero activity by the tourists to the New Zealand, until 1980’s when the first pictures of its marvelous beauty were posted in a travel magazine.
If you are flying from outside of the country then the best option will be to take a cheap flight to Christchurch and then take a 183 km drive on the SH1 to reach Kaikoura, which is located roughly halfway between the Christchurch and Blenheim. You can either take the local bus service that runs between these two cities or hire a car from Christchurch. Its gorgeous settings aside, another attraction of Kaikoura is the rich and diverse marine life of its coastal waters which is unmatched by any place on earth.
You will find thousands of Dolphins, whales, seals and penguins along with many albatross in the area which offer the best wild life experience at least in the country if not the continent. As the place has rose to fame in the tourism industry the accommodation and dinning facilities have improved tremendously over the past 10 years, now you can easily find a hotel that suits your budget and liking.
Other than just laying around on its beaches while relaxing and praising the awesome natural beauty of the place, there are a number of fun activities that can be done in the area. First is a whale watching tour that can be arranged with the help of your hotel, it will take you to the waters of the area with the highest density of these giants of the ocean. There is another tour in the area through which you can get quite personal with the Dolphins of the area while swimming and snorkeling along with them. The equipment for these activities like the wet suits and snorkeling gears are available from the local market as well as one can always hire it from the local tour operators.
If you are fond of adventurous sports then just 15 km outside the town you will find the roughest and the most exciting surfing opportunity. This surfing experience has become a real attraction for the area and thousands of tourists especially the neighboring Australians head to Kaikoura for just this reason.
Another famous adventurous activity is the sky diving, for which you don’t really need to be an expert diver as an expert will dive in tandem with you and will be taking care of the safety of both of you. Just imagine the snow peaked mountains on one side while the ocean on the other and you falling in the middle of it from thousands of feet in the air, the experience will be one that you won’t forget for a very long time.
